One
of the important film events of 2016 was the discovery, restoration and screening of the once thought to be lost A Cool Sound from Hell and it has been Daniel Kremer, who had published Sidney J. Furie: Life and Films, that has been responsible for this renewed attention to Furie (there's a terrific article at Filmmaker Magazine about finding the print). With the discovery of A Cool Sound from Hell, along with A Dangerous Age, Furie's role at the origins of Toronto's independent cinema becomes more apparent and his influence on Don Owen and his Nobody Waved Good-bye becomes more clear. Kremer is also
a filmmaker in his own right and is surprisingly passionate about Canadian cinema
for an American. Previous 100 Best Canadian Films lists include those by Yves Lever, Piers Handling, Marcel Jean, Mike Hoolboom
and myself. –
